Welcome to Year 6!
Welcome back, I hope you all enjoyed the half term break. We are now in the second half of the spring term and in Year 6 we are at the point where we really begin to focus and prepare for SATs.
This half term we will be using some of our afternoon sessions to complement our morning Mathematics sessions.
We will be exploring all aspects of Mathematics including number and place value, fractions, decimals and percentages, statistics, geometry and algebra. As well as this, we will be working on SAT's style questions and practising techniques for the test in May.
The book which we will be focusing on this term is ‘Storm breaker’ by Anthony Horowitz. During the unit we will be focusing on the use of hyphens and commas to avoid ambiguity, developing our skills in editing and peer assessment and proofreading for errors and spelling mistakes.
We will be also continuing our SPaG work revising key areas of grammar and punctuation
We will be continuing to work on our inference skills during our reading sessions and we will be developing our writing skills in a wide range of genres preparing for our independent writes which we will start this term.
We are continuing with our ‘Let’s Go Wild!’ theme this half term. Throughout our theme we will be looking at famous heroes of the scientific world such as: Linnaeus, Darwin and Einstein, we will be asking ourselves are polar bears heroes or villains? We will then be looking at their features and characteristics to answer this question. In our ICT work we will become digital literacy experts as we explore gender stereotypes in the media and compare and contrast responsibilities in on line and off line peer relationships.
This term we will be spending time preparing for SATs. It would be helpful if you could make sure your child always completes their homework. They will have Math, Spelling and Grammar or Reading homework sent home on a Thursday to be returned the following Wednesday.
There are websites that can help with revision at home, these include:
There are also lots of exciting events that will be happening over the half term, please check your child's newsletter for key dates and up-coming events.
Thank you for your continuing support,
Miss Peacock and Mrs Okon.
